Aubrey J. Sherman

Aubrey J. Sherman is a partner at the firm and his growing practice specializes in high-conflict family law including contested divorce applications. He has experience appearing before all levels of family court. As a fearless advocate, he offers a common sense approach while driving issues towards a timely, cost-effective and beneficial resolution. He provides creative and client-focused solutions for his clients to solve their problems. Aubrey also offers alternatives to traditional litigation to resolve disputes including mediation, negotiation, and collaborative family law, which serve to assist his clients in avoiding the expense and delay of litigation. He practices family law for every kind of family including blended families and same-sex couples. His clients appreciate his straightforward approach and the fact that he provides them with all the information they need to make informed decisions and an environment where his clients are confident that their family law matter is in capable and knowledgeable hands.

Aubrey’s approach is to promote settlement and he has the skills and ability to resolve conflict, while most lawyers are skilled at creating further conflict in adversarial actions between spouses or couples, which are not only costly financially and emotionally to the parties, but are damaging to their children. Because no two families are the same, he applies an individualized and creative approach to his client's separation and divorce. He believes that mutual respect and fairness can be the basis of separations and that it is all in the approach and the plan that his clients choose to create.

Aubrey promotes an interdisciplinary approach to family law by ensuring that his clients have the opportunity to obtain the advice of the best experts in other fields when family law problems intersect with other matters. He frequently works with forensic accountants, tax specialists, and psychologists.

He regularly appears before the Family Court in the Superior Court and the Ontario Court of Justice. He also advises and assists clients in the negotiation of Separation Agreements, Marriage Contracts and Cohabitation Agreements. Aubrey also practices in estate planning, estates, business law, and acts for property owners in all aspects of commercial and residential tenancy matters. Aubrey's diverse practice area benefits his clients and sets him apart from other family law lawyers because he understands the complex issues in other areas of law that apply to the family law proceedings especially in large-asset and complex property division.

Aubrey is an accomplished Volunteer Philanthropist and was a recipient of Waterloo Region’s Philanthropist of the Year Award and the K-W Kinsmen Club Award for Community Service. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for the Agency of Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region.
